The FROZEN PEAKS Event includes a range of mountain races of 10, 40, 80 and 240 kilometers, in the area of Nevrokopi, at the end of May. The North-Northwest part of the prefecture of Drama and specifically the wider area of the Municipality of Nevrokopi is characterized as the coldest part of Greece, due to its geographical peculiarity, with the very low temperatures in winter.
In the same place are the highest peaks of the mountains of the region, Tsolias in Orvilos 2212 m and Prophet Ilias in Falakro 2232 m, where even in summer the chill is noticeable. The name FROZEN PEAKS was given to the Organization of Mountain Games for this very reason. Precisely because they are held in an area characterized by the cold climate and the picturesque peaks of the mountains that surround it.
This Organization aspires to contribute to the development of sports tourism. In addition to unique agricultural products (potatoes, beans), animal husbandry, logging and marble businesses, the area has a rich history and historical monuments, folklore and traditions, war museum, picturesque churches, traditional settlements, places of rare natural beauty, rich fauna and flora, artificial lakes and ski resort.
The race routes aspire to highlight all of the above elements: the military forts of the Metaxa line which the Germans could not subdue in 1940, the old military installations, outposts and military paths, the Greek-Bulgarian border, the sites of rare beauty, the artificial lakes, the highest peaks of the mountains, the slopes of the Falakro ski resort, the villages, the traditional settlements and the picturesque churches of the area, the farmhouses and the quarry facilities.
