Observation in Elatia

In the location “Koutra” 72 kilometers north of Drama in the area of Elatia there is the Forest Village of Elatia among dense forests of spruce and forest pine. The most remarkable type of tree is the impressive spruce which in Greece is only found here because it prefers more northern European countries. These are imposing giants that exceed thirty meters with hanging branches that have a dramatic appearance, like dark veils and form dense and atmospheric forests. The area of Elatia is uniquely distinct and certainly different from the monotonous, flat corresponding forests of northern Europe due to the wide variety of trees and plants.
To the east of the Forest Village is the valley of “Stravoremos”, which is an ideal area for outdoor recreation. It owes its name to the meanderings of the homonymous stream which creates a beautiful meadow. The riverside downhill route of nearby Stravorema, suitable for hiking but tough even for four-wheel drive vehicles, intersects with the forest road of Megalo Rema.
Don’t neglect to see Vathyrema with alder and willow vegetation, the place called Kalyvia Koutra where every year on July 20th the Sarakatsanai of Eastern Macedonia take place. The wonderful forest paths that have been carved starting from the Forest Village offer unforgettable routes for hiking enthusiasts. Be sure to get supplies from Ironwater, which is also the last chance to fill up on gas.
