Falakro is a mountain unique in beauty and biodiversity characterized by large alpine areas, steep cliffs and dense forests, defining the landscape and wild nature in the east of Macedonia. With an altitude of 2,232 meters, Falakro dominates with its volume in the northern part of N. Drama. It is one of the most beautiful mountains of Greek nature, because despite its name, which is due to its characteristic peak, it is not only bare.
Falakro is the highest mountain of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace with a height of 2232m. It stands dominant in the center of the prefecture of Drama and shows its most beautiful self in two, mainly, seasons. In the spring, when the snow melts and its mountain meadows are covered with colorful flowers, and in the autumn, when on the wooded northern side of the mountain the green color of the foliage changes to golden yellow and then to fiery red. The stone here forms peaks, steep slopes and basins and keeps the visitor’s eye constantly alert. Climbing the northern slope, you may suddenly find yourself on a slope and the view of the mountain funnel at your feet will take your breath away, showing you the plain of Drama in its entirety.
It is a habitat of special botanical interest that has been characterized as the “mountain of flowers”. Wild orchids, dryads, succulents, crocuses, erythronias, primroses, oregano, thyme, mint and many, many more rare and common compose a symphony for all the senses. Of particular interest in Falakro is its northern side. On its today densely forested slopes, above the Nestos river, there are ruins of the old abandoned villages literally smothered by oaks, anchovies, chestnuts, birches and beeches.
Bald Mountain is famous for the rare and endangered butterfly species that live here, wildlife watchers and entomology enthusiasts come for a rare opportunity to photograph species such as Maculinea alcon, Neptis sappho and others. Also at altitudes above 1000 meters one can meet the herds of wild horses that have made the bald meadows their home for several years.
From Drama you will head to Volakas, a 45km route and from there you will follow the signs for the ski resort.
