At a short distance from Platania, in the Municipality of Paranesti, and specifically on the hill, in the location “Kales” or “Acropolis”, an ellipsoidal acropolis was located, which testifies to habitation from prehistoric times up to the 6th century AD. The archaeologists discovered fortification walls, an entrance to the west of the ancient settlement, roofs, paths that led to key points and many important objects, such as tools, weapons, coins, etc.
Due to the findings of the excavation, such as coins, shells, jewelry, metal objects, metal tools, stone, tools, weapons, figurine, bone tools, glass vessels, it appears that the habitation concerns the prehistoric era, Thracians, Romans as well as the Byzantine era. The excavation in the “Acropolis” of Platania began in the fall of 2009 and lasted three months.
There are other citadels in the area, where their finds are kept in the Archaeological Museum of Drama.
